I need to add “haunches in” into every ride at this point since I am having some issues with Mike picking up the right lead, which ultimately tells me there is some holes in my training. By going back to basic lateral work, I should be able to solve this problem in probably just a few rides.
“Haunches In” is a great way to get them set up for the proper lead departure since the lope starts with the hind outside hoof taking off first, which will help to enforce that they take off on the proper lead. This is also a great lateral movement to conquer at the lope to get lead changes down pat.

By setting your horse up for success, the more they learn to answer your questions. And the more they learn to answer them correctly the more they crave the questions.
